Ecce Homo
For its 13th anniversary Galerie Poggi is opening a summer location in the south of France, in Luberon, in a former 17th century hôtel particulier in Cavaillon, redesigned under Louis XV. The Hôtel Puyricard d’Agar is located just a few meters away from the Hôtel d’Agar in which the art-loving Morand-Valton family has built an exceptional collection over the past 30 years, mixing antiques, applied and popular arts, with 17th century and contemporary masterpieces. The hotel particulier that the gallery is taking over is currently being renovated and reviewed for inscription as a historical monument.

The gallery presents here an exhibition titled “Ecce Homo”, that brings together works from prehistoric times to contemporary art, including works from the Hôtel d’Agar, works of several of the gallery’s artists, international artists that were specifically invited for the occasion, and loans from Yvon Lambert’s collection. At the same time, the Hôtel d’Agar is presenting an exhibition of pieces from its prolific collection, “Caravaggio, Louis Finson, Georges Tony Stoll”, highlighting the 30th anniversary of the acquisition of two extraordinary paintings : the Caravaggios of Peiresc.
“Ecce Homo” aims to be an unvarnished portrait of present-day humanity, raw and sincere. Exploring the great questions that move our societies today – our relationship to nature, the question of gender, animality, our relationship to death – the different projects also simply interrogate representation. Ecce, “here is”, implies the question of our relationship to Others, what they perceive of me and what I let them perceive of myself. In this sense, this choral project is also a reflection on the role we bestow upon art, which we see as a reflection of our societies and the tool we collectively use to say “Ecce Homo”. The exhibition thus takes a chronologically transversal approach, establishing dialogues between works produced thousands of years apart.
Among the works chosen from the collections of the Hôtel d’Agar, there is a so-called immodest Venus in mammoth ivory from the Magdalenian age, which is dialoguing with a Romanesque alabaster by Gislebertus : the Adam of Autun, the counterpart of the famous Eve of the Autun cathedral, which was lost since the beginning of the eighteenth century.
