ART BASEL PARIS 2024
For the first edition of Art Basel Paris at the Grand Palais, Galerie Poggi is pleased to present a duo show featuring two Canadian artists of the same generation : Kapwani Kiwanga (1978, Hamilton) and Larissa Fassler (1975, Vancouver).
This project features one of the iconic sculptures created by Kapwani Kiwanga the Canada Pavilion during the 60th edition of the Venice Biennale.
The sculpture is composed of blown glass, glass beads, and palm oil. These materials, historically traded by Europeans with Indigenous populations of the Americas and Africa, highlight the cultural exchanges that have shaped our contemporary world. The use of these materials crystallizes Kiwanga’s ongoing research on global relations, power dynamics, and the reinterpretation of history through other perspectives.
We will also be featuring stunning ceramic works from the Serralves Foundation, never before exhibited in France. Made from Portuguese tiles, this series recognises the importance of the employed material, and reflects the cultural, social and economic influences inextricably linked to Portugal’s history.
While exploring Paris during a residency at the Musée d’Orsay last September, Larissa Fassler was drawn to the circular shape of the Bourse du Commerce and its impact on the orbital flows that the public creates around this “ocular” form at the western entrance of the Forum des Halles. Her new series illustrates a different hour and temperature of the day, in a manner reminiscent of how Monet represented the Cathedral of Rouen.
