Vera Pagava, “The Instruments of the Passion”

“During Lent 2026, a painting by Vera Pagava (1952) is placed on the altar. It temporarily replaces the masterpiece that is the brocade of the Duchess of Orléans (18th century) or the panel engraved on brushed brass (2020) used on ordinary days. This new antependium, as it is known, painted in the mid-20th century, is also an artistic masterpiece belonging to a very ancient genre, the Arma Christi (Arms of Christ). The composition accentuates the symbolic power of the altar, representing Christ, Christ at the Last Supper, and Christ in his tomb. Thus, the painting visually follows the words of the consecration on the eve of the Passion.”
