Kai Yoda
Kai Yoda, born in 1985 in Tokyo (Japan), lives and works in Paris. A visual artist and graduate of the Royal College of Art in London, his practice explores the boundaries between human creation and algorithmic processes. He develops a hybrid pictorial approach that weaves together hand drawing, historical iconography, photography, and artificial intelligence.

His practice draws on literary references and explores notions of floating temporality, memory, and perceptual ambiguity. The artist pursues an approach that investigates the potential of digital media through creative and transcultural hybridisations. His installations intertwine physical forms with virtual environments, offering immersive experiences where the real and the digital intersect. Around these digital landscapes, Kai Yoda integrates sculptural elements and 3D-printed objects, evoking a materiality rooted in the natural world. These forms, both abstract and organic, act as sensitive markers – traces of a tangible reality within a fictional space.
His more recent work focuses on painting, through which he extends his earlier reflections on the interplay between digital intervention and the living. Starting from hand-drawn sketches, photographs, and references to art history, he feeds the DeepDream image generator, which produces multiple iterations. He selects certain structures from these outputs and translates them into oil paintings. This back-and-forth between drawing, iconography, AI, and traditional painting generates images in which the human imprint dialogues with algorithmic alteration.
In 2012, he co-founded with Virginie Ittah the duo Ittah Yoda, within which he developed immersive environments combining virtual reality, sculpture, and painting from a post-anthropocenic and symbiotic perspective. They joined Galerie Poggi in January 2022, which dedicated a first solo exhibition to their work in spring 2023, alongside several solo and group exhibitions at the Centre Culturel Jean Cocteau in Les Lilas (FR), the Musée des Beaux-Arts d’Angers (FR), and the Centre International d’Art et du Paysage (FR).
